Level 1

Highland Fling

The Story - It Begins....

...only minutes have passed since the hideous creature that Dr. Willard had become gasped the last breath of it's violently short life-cycle. The experiment had failed, the gleam of immortality returned to the stars from which it came... Lara looks on silently, oblivious to the press of the bitter Antarctic wind.

Suddenly a ragged figure emerges from the dark, gaping hole of the meteor cavern - it is Willard, a human reborn, but in the throes of death.  A shambolic hand gestures wildly, a final, guttural, laugh tears the silence, and the figure slumps forward and is still.

With the snow already forming a ghastly shroud over the body, Lara quickly tears an object from the dead man's grasp. A wallet, the monogrammed 'W' now standing sadly against Willard's last earthly remains.

Inside, the usual collection of tattered mementoes, a hodgepodge of foreign currency and.....but this cannot be! A familiar expression glides across Lara's face; an eyebrow raised by a wry and knowing smile - before her, a telegram urging an immediate return to take possession of another artefact - now secure beneath the Scottish mists at Willard's Loch Ness Estate....

"The adventure continues...” says Lara, to nothing but Willard's dark laughter still ringing in her ears - “So there was a fifth....." It has been said: "Dead men tell no tales." For Lara, Willard's wallet held clues. Why would a dying man hold out his wallet to someone who just ended his life? What was Willard trying to tell Lara? A warning? Lara picked up the monogrammed wallet examining the foreign currency, a map of England, and a photo of Willard's estate.

"Well, well," Lara mused, "it looks like I have a fan. He has a newspaper clipping of me. I didn't know he was so.. Attached." The telegram catches her eye. It's a telegraph to Willard from one of his henchmen.

"Fifth Artefact found. Stop. Delivery confirmed to your Loch Ness estate. Stop. Warning (unreadable) knows about this. Stop." Lara makes her plans, "So it's back to the UK for me. Where is that helicopter of mine?"

Walkthrough.

A Union Jack Airways helicopter flies over the castle and drops Lara off to explore Willard's Scottish castle near the lake of Loch Ness. The sound of the helicopter blades continue to slice the air as Lara finds herself behind bars.

Behind the bars:

Stuck behind the bars! Check out the No Trespassing signs with the bullet holes, then start climbing the vines to get up and over the bars.  Drop down to the floor below.

Room with pool and helicopter:

Climb up to the barred window to view the helicopter, and then go over by the pool to see a tantalising medi-pack on the other side of the pool. Pull the wooden block along the wood floor to the centre.

Climb on top of the wooden block, then monkey swing your way over and pick up the small medi-pack. Inscribed on the wall is "Willard's Well".  Drop into the water and swim through the underwater tunnel to the outside.

The lake:

As you swim into the lake, a current will pull you down the river and will only release you once you are near the opening in the rocks. Swim through the opening in the rocks to the landing. Swim under the landing and pick up a set of harpoons.

Explore the lake past the landing by swimming through the narrow channel.  On the landing side of the lake, get out of the water between the pillars supporting a large arch. Near one of the pillars supporting the arch is a set of harpoons and find another set of harpoons near the opposite arch.

Swim to the opposite side of the lake near the wooden walkway above some underwater bars. Look near one of the pillars supporting the overhead arch for one more set of harpoons. Not much more you can do now, so return to the landing and climb out of the water.

(There are some goodies on the other side of the lake which you will be able to get later.)

After the lake:

The "No Trespassing" signs indicate you are going the right way, so follow the path up the hill and enter first opening into the building.  Look for a well hidden crawl space to the left of the ramp that leads to a higher level.

Enter the crawlspace and look to the right for some much needed flares. Light a flare using the Flare key and explore the cave and find another crawlspace. Crawl through the new crawlspace and stay along the left wall and crawl up the ramp until you find a place to stand up an overhead door.

Look in a small alcove near the overhead door and pull the switch to open the overhead trap door. Jump and grab and climb out of the crawling cave.

Two mean dogs with red laser eyes attack.

Kill them. Go back through the crawlspace and now up the ramp. Kill the guard after he opens the gate. Pick up another box of flares from the dead guard. (Note, it probably would be better to get the guard to open the gate, and then go through the crawlspace.)

Area with small stacked crates:

Go through the doorway with the crests on the wall on either side of the door. Enter a room with all openings barred except for the one on the right. Go out the window and drop down to the high ledge outside. Follow the ledge keeping the wall on your left side. Take a long running jump and use the arrow keys to turn while in the air to land around the corner on the bridge that spans the lake below.

Bridge with two statues of dogs:

If you want to catch a glimpse of Nessie, save your game after killing the guard. Click here for Nessie Spotting. On the bridge, kill the guard and find three sets of shotgun shells.

As you near the statues of the dogs, a hawk will descend from the sky. On the other end of the bridge, drop down into the pit with the steam and pick up a set of shotgun shells. Notice the two gates on either side of the steam pit.

Now that you are on the other side of the lake, how about getting some of those goodies you noticed before.

Remember that rocket you saw on the opposite side of the lake near the landing where you exited the lake. Go to the centre of the bridge where you can see the landing. Take a long running jump from the outside edge of the bridge to the grassy part of the nearby hill.

Use simple jumps to navigate your way across the hill to the flat low ledge with the rocket opposite the landing. Pick up your rocket, jump in the water and repeat the trip back up to the bridge.

Vine climbing:

On the bridge and to the right of the steam pit, make your way down to the lower ledge and take a standing jump with grab over the gap to the vine coloured wall (a leap of faith). Use the Look key to change back to the normal view. Climb down to the bottom and shoot the hawk that descends after you. Make your way to the wooden walkway by the lake and pick up a small medi-pack.

Climb back up the vines all the way to the within one block's width from the top. Take a backwards jump and land on the roof of Willard's castle.  As you explore, shoot the hawk, then explore the top of the castle and find one sneaky guard hidden behind a wall.

He crouches and sneaks around ducking your gunfire. Once you finish him off, look up and notice an even higher opening above some vines. From the high ledge, do a standing jump with grab to the ledge to the higher opening.  Find Secret #1, the shotgun and two sets of shotgun shells.

Swan Dive with a funky twist (optional): otherwise go to the next paragraph.

Stand Lara on the left corner (facing the water, near the vine where she climbed up) and Swan Dive (while holding the "Roll-Key") so Lara just barely clears the LEFT side of the Bridge, headed for that small body of water on the inland side of the underwater Grating.

Return to the roof, and do a standing jump with grab to the vines and climb down to the bridge level. When Lara's hands are level with the ledge shimmy left and pull up.

Bridge (right side of steam pit):

Go near the steam pit and shoot the guard, which is on the right side of the steam pit. Take a long running jump over the gap. Jump into the pool of water and find two sets of harpoons and the Crowbar on the bottom of the pool. Get out of the pool and find the switch near the pool.

Save your game.

Pull the switch, which opens a timed gate to the right of the steam pit on the bridge. Use the Look key to stop the cut scene. Turn left and jump over the ramp. Run and take a long running jump across the gap back to the bridge.

Continue running and take a right into the open gate (right of the steam pit.)

(Note: the cut scene is very misleading because it shows the side of the gate you have not yet seen in the game. OOPS! This drove me crazy for quite some time.)

After gate to the right of the steam pit:

Whew! After making it into the room with the crates, save your game, then, shoot the guard that keeps sneaking around behind some low blocks and pick up a small medi-pack. Find the room with the dog statue.

As you enter the room, LET the guard open the gate, and run through the timed gate before it closes. Roll and shoot the guard who follows you in. Use the Crowbar to open the padlocked wood door. Secret #2! Pick up the MP5 and two sets of MP5 clips.

Find the crawlspace near the gate and crawl out over the burning grate.

That was fun!

Enter the cemetery room with several gravestones.

Cemetery room with several gravestones:

As you explore the gravestones, another guard will enter, shoot him and pick up some shotgun shells. Make your way down to the room with the mist near the floor. Shoot one more guard. In the mist, find shotgun shells near the room of mud and find a small medi-pack in an alcove in the corner. If the misty floor beyond the opening looks suspicious, you are correct.

It is quicksand from which you will not return. Return to the room with gravestones and find the opening to the outside.

Mud lake:

Follow the perimeter of the castle wall until you can go no further. Take a long running jump to the pillar on the right. Now take a simple jump to the next high pillar. Walk to the centre of the pillar as a hawk will fly in and try to push you off the pillar. After dispatching the hawk, take a simple jump to the green moss covered pillar on the left. On the green pillar, look down and you will see a triangular flat block at the bottom of the ramp.

Do a simple jump to the ramp and you need to land on the ramp and slide down to the widest part of the triangular flat ledge. From the triangular flat ledge, take a simple diagonal jump to the left and land on a ledge even with the mud lake.

Look across the mud lake, and you will see a crest on the wall opposite (behind a pillar). You now need to make your way across the mud lake while keeping the wall on your left side. Lara will disappear under the mud, but emerge to catch a breath. Enter the small opening underneath crest on the wall and then take a left.

Go through the crawlspace and take the first left.

Mists with unclimbable hill:

Make your way to the low area with the fog and two dog statues. Pick up MP5 clips, shotgun shells, a small medi-pack and some flares. You may want your shotgun for the two dog statues when they come alive.  After getting your goodies, return to the crawlspace and take a left.

Follow the crawlspace until you find yourself back in the room with mists and mud near the cemetery. Immediately, start climbing (do not try to walk through the mud). Climb to the top and pick up a small medi-pack on the way. When you are at the top, climb up into the high small alcove and pick up the Thistle Stone.

Do a jump grab to the vine monkey bars and follow the overhead vines across the mud room below. Drop down and slide down the ramp to the area where you originally pulled the switch.

Return to the main bridge.

Bridge (left side of steam pit):

Go to the side of the bridge that overlooks the lake. From the ledge near the vine covered building, take a long running jump to the rock hill (towards the lake). Walk as close to the lake and near the right wall.

You will see something behind the wall of the building. Take a long running jump and curve your turn to the right while in the air. Land on the rock ledge just beyond wall of the building. Pick up the harpoon gun and some arrows.

Area with crates by river, across from harpoon gun:

Save your game. The only way back is to drop into the water for a swim.  Remember the area with the crates across the river? Swim upstream and towards the crate area. There is some bug, that if you pressing the action button and if you are swimming near the crate area. Lara will suddenly pop out of the water and land on top of the crate area. Pick up the Uzi's.

Now swim back to the landing, and make your way back up the main bridge with the steam pit.

Bridge (left side of the steam pit):

Return to the bridge and go to the left side of the bridge (left of the steam pit). Find the outer left ledge on the bridge. Find the vine covered building with two small openings. You need to get to the opening that faces the lake of the vine covered building.

Take a long running jump from the outer ledge of the bridge to the dark ledge in the corner near the opening. Do a jump grab to the wall and climb up into the opening.  Yikes, bats fly out. Save your game and pull the switch to open the gate on the bridge which is left of the steam pit.

Use the Look key to stop the cut scene (it shows the wrong side of the gate and is just confusing.) Do a roll and slide down the ramp towards the bridge. If you slide down the left side of the ramp, you can do a jump from the ramp to the bridge.  (Otherwise just hold down the action key to grab the edge.). Run through the gate which is left of the steam pit.

After gate (left of steam pit):

Shoot the guard. You can explore the room on the left and find another switch. This switch opens a nearby gate back to the room with the other switch. Return to the main room where you shot the guard and find the opening in the wall opposite the gate you entered.

Room with large gate and torch:

Aha, a gate and probably the exit from the level. Place the Thistle Stone in the receptacle on the left side of the gate. Not much more you can do now, so find a door to the outside on the left side of the gate. If you happened to forget about those dog statues, one will suddenly come to life and scare the daylights out of you.

Continue following the path until you reach the deep pit.

If you draw your guns as you walk slowly into the pit room, Lara may target the guard on the ledge high above, so kill him quick.

The Deep pit:

Pick up some flares near the barred window. You can see Nessie cruise by when looking through the Grating next to the deep pit with the boiling green-goo.  If Lara stands several steps left of the right side of that wide Grating, Nessie swims from behind the Watch-Tower with the Flag she stopped at earlier (when viewed from the second Bridge) to beyond the hills to the right.

Look for the overhead vines above the pit. You will need to stand near the pit and do a jump grab to the vines. Monkey bar your way across the pit.

Save your game.

Go through the crawl space and carefully note the nearby crawlspace. Keep well over the right and crawl as fast as you can into the nearby crawlspace to beat the boulder before poor Lara turns into a pancake.

When the coast is clear, follow the ramps up, you will need to crawl on the high ramp. Find yourself high above the deep pit.

High above the deep pit:

Use the old jump and shoot trick from the lower ledge to take out the guard on the higher ledge (unless you killed him earlier). Jump, and then shoot at the top of your jump.  Repeat jumping and shooting until the guard is dead. Climb up on the higher ledge and shoot the hawk that is circling around. Now that the coast is clear, do a simple jump to the centre ledge above the pit.

Walk to the other end, and you will see a small opening in the wall (opposite the ledge with the guard). Line up a long running jump and avoid the overhead obstacles. Land and pick up some MP5 clips.

Looking for Nessie (optional): otherwise carry on at "normal"

After picking up the MP5 clips, don't leave yet. Save your game. Look outside and spot a black spot on the left wall. If you move around a bit, you can see light through the black spot.

Line up a standing jump with grab to the black spot on the wall. This is not and easy jump and make take several tries. You are supposed to slide down a ramp and land on a pillar. If you land in the mud, you will need to try the jump again.

Once you have landed on the pillar, turn around and look down through the mist. You will see an opening in the wall. From the pillar, drop down on the side of the pillar farthest from the opening (centre yourself on the pillar before dropping down.) Pick up a large medi-pack.

From the right-hand side do a long running jump while curving your turn in the air using the arrow keys to land on the ledge by the large opening in the wall.

On the ledge by the large opening, lower yourself into the mud, and then pull up on the ledge again. Nessie will appear of the far side of the mud pit.

Start wading through the mud into the opening. Secret #3! Wade through the mud until you reach a cave with a pool of water. Jump in and get the flares, then swim across the pool and approach the opening in the wall on the right side. It's your old friend Nessie (the Loch Ness Monster) breathing fire. Wait until Nessie gets a gulp of air and run into the water underneath Nessie.

Light a flare and follow the underwater tunnel, swimming downhill. Emerge in a cave with a hill. Swim around and search for another underwater opening underneath the hill. Swim up and emerge in some kind of Control Centre.

Looking for Nessie - Control Centre:

Climb out by the large medi-pack and turn around and shoot the guard. Pick up your goodie, then swim to the other side and pick up a grenade. Check out the control room, noting the maps of Loch Ness and the drawings of the Loch Ness monster. Nessie is a fake!

This is the control room for controlling Nessie.

Find the switch on the wall with the control panel. Push it to open the gate. Enter the opened gate and follow the stairs up, killing a dog along the way. Follow the steps with the torches up, and then start climbing.

Keep climbing until you get to the top, then do a jump grab and slide down the ramp back into the meadow with the walkway. You will now need to repeat the trip back up to high above the pit. Monkey swing across the pit, crawl through the crawlspace, (no boulder this time) and climb the higher ledge.

Normal Path:

High above the pit:

Return to the ledge where you killed the guard. Go up the stairs and locate a small medi-pack in an alcove off the higher ledge. Now, go outside and find yourself high above the green meadow. Take a long running jump with grab to the ledge on the opposite end of the wall. Bats!

Walk inside as the bats fly out; turn to your left facing the sloped wall (with the ledge you just leaped to in front on the wall).  Jump and grab the vine covered wall. Climb up until you are level with the ledge behind you, then do a leap backwards off the wall to land on the ledge.

Top above the pit:

Now take a long running jump to the central ledge near the dark alcove. A hawk attacks and tries to knock you down from the ledge. Pick up the MP5 clips from the dark alcove. Take a long running jump to the other alcove and pick up a small medi-pack.

Return to the central ledge and standing on the highest part do a jump grab to the hole in the ceiling. Climb on top of the roof, and carefully walk to avoid dropping into the other holes in the roof. Shoot the hawk, to avoid you getting knocked off the roof.

Now pick up the second Thistle Stone.

Drop through the hole in the ceiling back to the centre ledge above the pit. Take a long running jump to the large opening. Slide down the ramp and find your way back to the large gate with the Thistle Stone receptacles. Use the Action key to place the Thistle Stone in the remaining receptacle. Enter the now open gate and pick up the flares.
