Shakespeare Cliff

Introduction

Lara, for once, was at a loss - someone else had reached the Fifth Artefact first. But who? The telegram had warned of someone else. They must have it. Whoever "they" were, they were good - Willard's guards continuing to blindly guard something that wasn't there. And what of this glowing substance, deadly to the touch? A nasty little by-product of the missing artefact, no doubt. Stumped, Lara returned to her mansion to figure out her next move.

A few days later, an unexpected intrusion on her morning tea - and her next clue arrives blithely up the garden path, conveyed by the surly paper boy. The repairs to the last week's tunnel explosion had begun - her morning paper reporting the destruction caused "by some unknown force." She notices the mysterious glowing substance has been found in the mangled remains of the tunnel - a very familiar glow.  Lara grins as she concludes her breakfast.. "Ugh! Cold tea, but a piping hot trail!”

Walkthrough

Outside:

The helicopter drops Lara off outside the tunnel.  The Slinc repair team is already at work by the looks of all of the crates marked Slinc. Approaching the truck triggers a sniper with a laser-sighted gun. After shooting the guard, climb on a crate to pick up some flares. Make your way to the door with the switch.  Near the door is a green crate. Climb over the crate and drop down near the truck, now push the crate away from the truck. Pick up Desert Eagle clips.

Pull the switch to open the door.

Inside the building (control room):

Shoot one of the work crew holding a big wrench. Continue into the next room until you reach the control room.  Shoot the two workmen with wrenches that guard the control room. Push the green crate towards the fenced wall to uncover some shotgun shells. Now pull the crate back to the centre of the room. There is now an opening in the fenced wall near the crate.

Enter the opening for Secret#1. Pick up a large medi-pack and some shotgun shells. Return to the control room and find a small medi-pack.  Go down the stairs near the control room. Explore the large room at the bottom of the stairs with a fenced off area down below with fires. Not much you can do here, so go back up the stairs and take a left from the stairs to the huge fans. After you have sliced and diced poor Lara a few times trying to get past the fans, climb up on the short block near the fan.

Shoot out the vent in the wall (above the short block) and enter the air shaft. Shoot out the vents at the other end of the air shaft and pick up a grenade on the other side of the fan.

Return back up the stairs to the control room.

Now that you figured out how to shoot out vents, find the vents near the control room by the FIRE sign. Shoot out the vents in the wall to reveal fires behind the vents. Yup, that is the exit, so climb up.  Fires and the Drill!

Time a simple jump past the fires and make your way up to the drill.  (Hint, you can stand at the very edge of the block where the fire is and not take damage.) Walk around the drill pit until you spot the climbing ladder on the inside of the pit. Go to the wall opposite of where you entered the drill room.

Save your game. Face the wall with the ladder behind you and do a backward somersault to the ramp above the climbing ladder. 

Slide down the ramp while holding down the Action key to grab the ledge.  Start climbing down the ladder. Now the drill is descending as you climb down.

As you near the bottom of the climbing ladder, climb sideways and drop off on the left ledge. Do Not Move! A fire is triggered on the same ledge. As long as you stay near the wall, you will not get burned. Side-step sideways while facing the wall, then time a backwards jump to avoid getting burned. WAIT until the two drills descend, then line up a long running jump across the pit to the fan area.

The fans:

Light a flare and flip the switch on the short block near the fan. The switch opens a trap door on the other side of the fan. Save your game.  Climb up on the short block near the fan, and use the Action and Up arrow to enter the high crawlspace. Crawl forward and then left.

Immediately stand up after going left. Two rats are gnawing at poor Lara. Use the Roll key and your pistols to take out the rats. Light a flare and pull the switch on the wall to turn off the fan. Go back down the crawlspace the way you came and past the fan to the trapdoor.

OR

If you missed the switch in the crawlspace, you can continue down the crawlspace and drop down to find yourself on the stairs near the control room. Find your way back to the fans by the control room, and use the vents you shot out earlier to get around the fan.  When you are between the 4 fans, drop through the trap door.

Area with burning barrels and pit:

If you landed on the middle ledge, go back by the wall and look for a narrow space along the wall. Find some flares. You can explore the rest of this room by doing a jump grab from the middle ledge to explore the top ledge. 

You can also explore the back of the room by dropping down to the bottom floor from the middle ledge and then using the climbing ladder to get back out. After you are done exploring, do a jump grab to the ledge by the pit and climb up. Jump your way around the pit to the other side and drop down.

Shoot the workman with his wrench, and then climb up on the right side of the room. Near the small pit in the floor near the fence, try to shoot the guard running in and out of the high room. Do a jump grab to the overhead ledge near the light and climb up. Enter the dark tunnel in the wall and shoot the sniper (if you haven't already). Near the flames, look overhead to see a higher room with a grated floor and some goodies.

Save your game. Go back to the blocks with flames and climb up on the short block above the flames. Shoot out the vents and enter the air shaft.  At the end of the air shaft, turn around and do a jump grab to the higher ledge. Pick up a small medi-pack and shotgun shells from the room above the flames. Go back down, slide down the ramp and stop above the train tracks.

Train Tracks:

Save your game. Jump down and head over to the yellow door on the other side of the tracks. Do a simple jump over the ramp as a train comes whizzing by. Now head up to the train tunnel to the left side of the yellow door.

Save your game because "dying that horrendous Thud-Crunch Blood-Splattering "Ugh" death multiple times as her limp body careened down the Tracks like a lifeless Rag-Doll." To avoid becoming the lifeless rag doll, start running up next to the left wall and start sprinting at the white lights in the tunnel. Sprint along hugging the left wall by adding the left arrow key and beat the train.

Note: if Lara has her body firmly touching against the LEFT wall the train will pass her without harm; this works if she is walking, running, sprinting, or just standing.

OR EVEN EASIER

Just before you get to the light face the wall and side step until the wall turns green, then press Lara firmly against the wall (still facing it) and the train will go straight past.

Pick up the large medi-pack from the tracks. Return to the tunnels in the wall. Admire the graffiti, and then enter the other tunnel. Secret#2! Pick up a rocket and find some of the early attempts at digging the tunnel. Pick up the Rocket Launcher from behind the old train.

Now return to the yellow door, and go up the train tunnel to the right side of the yellow door. Climb up on the right side and do a simple jump to the higher ledge. Explore and find a deep pit. Not much more you can do now, return to the yellow door. Save your game, load up on health and get out a better weapon than the pistols (the shotgun), now pull the switch to open the yellow door. Enter the door.

The Quad bike and the pits:

Shoot the workman and the sniper that attack. Now out find what they were protecting behind the crates.

Get on the quad bike and drive up the ramp. Now you need to jump across the train track as a train flies by below. Drive down the dip before you fly over the train tracks. The next jump is the deep pit you found earlier. Back up as far as you can.

Grab a nearby hand to help out. (Yes, this is the three handed control model.)

Hold down the hand brake and add the gas. Let go of the handbrake and fly over the pit. Immediately on landing, take a right or you will have that sinking feeling accompanied by explosions and quad bike tires flying in the air.

For the next pit, get the quad bike turned around and lined up on the left side to go over the pit. Use the handbrake while accelerating to get a turbo boost. Let go of the handbrake to fly over the pit.  Land. You can get off the quad bike and climb up on a high block to check out your landing area on the other side of the pit. Line up a jump for the centre of the ramp for the final pit.

Land by the train and run over the workman with the wrench.

Pit by train - top level:

Get off the quad bike by the train and check out the machinery. Find the switch near the burning barrel and the machinery. Pull the switch to open a blue door. Carefully navigate on the top ledge to the other end of the train (staying along the same wall as the switch) to find the blue doors. 

Entering the bathroom triggers a workman with a wrench in one of the other bathrooms. Shoot him as he comes flying out the bathroom door. Notice the card reader in one of the bathrooms, and pick up 2 sets of shotgun shells in the other two bathrooms.

YOU NOW HAVE A CHOICE YOU CAN EITHER DESCEND BY FOOT (EASIER) OR BY QUAD BIKE.

I have done it by foot; the walk-through for the quad bike is marked further on.

BY FOOT.

Go out by the train to the right side of the pit and take a diagonal jump to the scaffolding area on the right. Shoot the workman and find your way blocked by a burning barrel.

You can get over the burning barrel by using a long running jump, or by standing next to it on the left and side stepping to the right until you can pull up.

(My barrel did not even ignite.)

Pick up the rocket and climb to the bottom. You can get up to the wooden ramp by the ladder by standing in the corner near the ladder and using Action + up arrow. Pick up the small medikit.

Return to the ladder and climb up so that you get to the scaffold area to the right of the ladder.

Find the MP5 clips on the stairs near the small pit in the scaffolding area, which triggers a couple of rats. Kill them and go to the bottom of the stairs, this triggers a sniper and a workman.

After you have killed them both go back to the stairs where you got the MP5 clips and find a ladder into a pit. Climb down.

Bottom of the pit (dirt area):

Either run over or shoot the workman in his orange coveralls. Look through the grating of the small pit to see some sort of drill. Walk out to the pit and notice the small ledge to the left. Back up a bit and take a simple jump to the small ledge.

From this ledge there is a really tall ladder to the bottom of the pit.

This leads to some harpoons, but it is much safer to leave them now and get them later.

(You can use a long running jump from the climbing ladder ledge to the steel ledge and back again to get back and forth across the pit.)

From the ledge take a running jump across to the steel ledge and pick up the Drill Activator Card, continue along the ledge jumping up the next level and immediately turn right to find a switch on the orange beam. Flip it to open the doors opposite the steel ledge.

Return to where you crossed over and notice a small flat area to the right of the ladder ledge, make a running jump over there (or jump back to the ladder ledge and make some small jumps to the doors) and continue towards the doors.

CONTINUE ON FOOT FURTHER DOWN.

NAVIGATING THE PIT BY QUADBIKE.

Near the train is a ramp. Drive the quad bike up the ramp and jump to the top of the train.

Stop the quad bike without falling off the train (using reverse works pretty good to stop). Save your game. Back up the bike as far as you can (on the top of the train) and line up a jump to the right side of the ledge on the other side of the pit. Make the jump over the pit and drive along the ledge up one more ramp, land and brake or turn to avoid the burning barrel straight ahead as you land.

If you haven't got the Uzi's and you want a real challenge, you can now try to get them by lining up the quad bike to the right of where you jumped over from up the dangle.  With the barrel to the right and behind you. Zoom up the rocks cutting sharply to the right at the top to land on the corner ledge.

Dismount and pick up the guns. Carefully turn the bike round to face where you came from. Run up the rocky ledge and turn left to miss the peak, and then quickly right to miss the burning barrel.

Drive down through the dirt cave until you reach a wooden ramp near the fallen down train. Park the bike and get off. Pick up the small medi-pack from the wooden ramp. Use the quad bike to jump from one wooden ramp to the other wooden ramp on the other side of the pit.

Other side of the pit by wooden ramps:

Stop in the corner and check out your next move. You need to drive down the slanted hill to the ledge on the right. Drive down and stop because a sniper is shooting at you from underneath the train. Use the MP5 to take him out, and take the other sniper out that is walking back and forth among the scaffolding on the other side of the pit. Pick up the flares when it's safe.

Your next move is to drive along the slanted ledge underneath the train to the scaffolding area on the other side of the pit. Drive across the pit, and run over the sniper if you haven't killed him already.

Other side of the pit in the scaffolding area:

Get off the bike and go out on the ledge that overlooks the pit. Using the MP5, you can take out another sniper on the other side of the pit near the bottom.

Find the MP5 clips on the stairs near the small pit in the scaffolding area, which triggers a couple of rats. Get on the quad bike and drive into the small pit by the stairs. (No harm will come to Lara)

Line the quad bike up next to the barrel facing the pit; add turbo to give her the extra to get over the pit.  Keep the gas on make the jump to the other side of the pit.

Bottom of pit (steel ledge):

(Kill the sniper, if you haven't already.) Get off the bike and look in the right hallway for some grenades by a dirt hill. (This is also the way to get the quad bike back to the other side of the pit.)

Return to the area by the jump and pull the switch on the wall, which opens a gate on the other side of the pit (Lara is standing in front of the switch). Walk out to the steel ledge and pick up the Drill Activator Card. Drive the quad bike across the steel ledge and make a jump to the open gate opposite the steel ledge.

REGARDLESS WHICH WAY YOU GOT HERE YOU MUST CARRY ON FROM HERE.

Bottom of the pit (after gate):

Explore the first room. Find a small medi-pack near a fenced window. Enter the room with the burning barrel and climb up to the room with the drill. Two workmen attack, kill them and avoid backing into the burning barrel. Pick up a small medi-pack and flares for your troubles.

Tunnel with drill:

Explore the tunnel and find some Uzi clips back by the blue toilets.  This triggers three rats. Find the switch near the motor. Pull the switch down to start the motor and turn the drill. After admiring the turning drill, find an opened trap door between the drill and the motor.

Drop down to the bottom and find the card slot for the Drill Activator Card. Insert the card. The drill is turning and creating a bit of an earthquake. Turn around and use a standing jump with grab to get out. Climb out and find out what the drill has done.

After the drill:

Do a simple jump over the heaped dirt to the newly excavated area. Find the hole in the floor and drop down and slide down a long ramp. Kill the two rats. Pull the switch to open the gates. Take a long running jump with grab to the doorway on the other side of the pit.

Pick up the Pump Access Disk.

DON'T RUN DOWN THE HALL YET OR YOU WILL FINISH THE LEVEL EARLY.

The cut scene shows those blue bathrooms near the train at the top of the pit. Now you need to climb back up to the top.

Back to the top of the pit:

Take a diagonal long running jump with grab to the climbing ladder on the other side of the pit. Climb up to the top. Do a simple jump to get out of the small ledge above the ladder. Make your way back up to the top of the dirt hill. Find a climbing ladder and climb up.

Go back out by the large pit. Find the other climbing ladder and climb up, then sideways to the top. Jump over the burning barrel and make a diagonal jump back to the train side of the pit. Run around the train and find the blue bathrooms on the other side. Place the Pump Access Disk into the card reader in one of the bathrooms to turn on the pumps.

The pit fills with water.

Pit with water:

Climb on top of the train and go to the left corner near the pit. Save your game. Line up a jump to the pit where you won't crack Lara's head open. Use the swan dive; add the roll key to do a spectacular dive to the bottom.

After landing in the water, pick up the harpoons you bypassed earlier and swim around until you see a tunnel, swim up the tunnel and pick up some more harpoons on the floor.

At the end of the tunnel, swim up and climb out on the short ledge.

Lost World:

You are far underground, who knows what you might find. Secret #3!

Save your game.

Follow the ledge until you come to a lava pit. Take a simple jump to the left and then jump over the short ramp to the top. Slide down the next ramp and do a standing jump with grab to the ledge in the corner. Wait a bit to see find out what the strange noise is.  It is a pterodactyl, a prehistoric bird that happened into the wrong time zone.

This bird is very intent on pushing you into the lava pit, so stay in the corner and shoot away. Now take a simple jump to the next ledge.  Now a long running jump to the next ledge and one more long running jump to the ledge in the corner. Nowhere to go!

Do a jump grab to the wall and shimmy to the left until you just get passed a red triangle rock above you, pull up on the slanted ramp and do a backwards jump.

Land on a ledge with a large medi-pack. 

(Somewhere another pterodactyl is triggered.) Get your goodie and go to the other side of the ledge. Spot another medi-pack near the lake, take a simple jump to the ledge and pick up your second large medi-pack.

The last remaining pterodactyl seemed to be stuck down by the lake making it an easy target. Slide down into the lake and return to the pit.

The underwater pit:

Swim until you find the underwater orange building. Enter the orange building and swim down the tunnel to the yellow door.
